Ratings Analyst

The Local Government, South Region provides ratings for counties, municipalities, and school districts throughout the southern U.S. You will join a professional team of analysts that maintains a strong culture of analytical excellence and customer service in a supportive and collegial environment, so effective teamwork and a thoughtful approach to problem-solving is highly valued.

This position is key to maintaining our market relevance and meeting our transaction requirements. As a Grade 9 professional, you will contribute to team initiatives while taking accountability for individual targets. Specifically, in this role, you will:

  • Conducting in-depth research and preparing comprehensive documents and presentations for rating committees, demonstrating strong attention to detail and ability to identify potential issues
  • Attend rating committee meetings alongside senior analysts as assigned, actively participating and contributing towards team goals
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of ratings criteria and financial statement analysis
  • Assist in the collection and analysis of data on special projects, resolving issues that are often varied and non-routine
  • Collaborating with analysts to publish periodic thought leadership articles
  • All employees are required to work from the office a minimum of 2 days per week
  • We require all candidates who reach the final stage of our interview process to attend at least one in-person interview, which is ordinarily at your nearest S&P Global Ratings office. This must be completed before we can proceed to an offer

Basic Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree (BS/BA) in finance, accounting, economics, government/public policy, or similar field required
  • 1+ years of relevant work experience in finance, analysis, or related field
  • Demonstrated interest in local government operations and municipal finance
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work well both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficiency in financial modeling and data analysis, including cash flow and credit models
  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage confidently with clients
  • Outstanding proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; knowledge of programming languages and data analytics, as well as experience with AI and automation tools that enhance efficiency, is a plus
  • Willingness to learn through both formal training and hands-on experience, adaptability to handle changing priorities and complex situations, and creativity to bring innovative ideas to improve processes and outcomes
  • Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven environment while managing multiple priorities with organization and attention to detail

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with municipal bond analysis or public sector financial evaluation
  • Knowledge of government accounting principles and financial reporting standards
  • Familiarity with credit rating methodologies and analytical frameworks
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks based on importance and urgency while managing competing deadlines
